14th March 2013 - Houston to New Orleans

This morning we headed left Houston early to get to New Orleans. Without stopping, the drive was about 5 and a half to 6 hours long. We wanted to get an early start so we would arrive at New Orleans at a reasonable time.

Not much interesting happened on our drive. We left Texas, and entered Lousiana. The kids had Subway for lunch so they got a tasty cheese and ham roll. Renee and I had Taco Bell for lunch. We got a combo pack which had 2 tacos and an enchilda. Interesting thing was the Taco shells were actually big Doritos. Tasty.

We were going to arrive in New Orleans mid afternoon so we added a stop. We stopped at Laura Plantation which is about an hour before New Orleans. There are several plantation tours you can take in New Orleans, but most of them convientally leave out all details of slaves. This is the only one I know of that actually discusses slaves and see and hear stories about them, not just the rich family that owned the property. It was an hour tour, and the kids were pretty well behaved for this. A few things we have wanted to do they have been a little painful. Its a little frustrating at times, but you stop and remember how old they are and we are trying to get them to be perfect little angels at something they have no interest in.

We left the plantation and continued to New Orleans. It was about 6:30 when we arrived and checked into the hotel. We then walked down to Canal St and Bourbon St to find somewhere for tea. We checked at a few places and there was about an hour wait on a table. We were trying to get something that was a little tradional, but i guess so was everyone else. We ended up having Ihop as it was already about 7:15 and we needed the kids to eat. We all had pancakes for tea which was something new. The kids really haven't had pancakes at all so I think they enjoyed it. Kobe was a little ratty by the end of it but with the early morning and time in the car it wasn't too surprising.

We got the kids back to the hotel for a quick shower, and then to bed. We had queen beds here so we put the kids to bed in the same bed. The double bed was just a little too small for them to go to sleep without bothering each other.

Once asleep, I left the hotel alone and walked down Bourbon St again to have another look. Interesting place. Most things so far Spring Break has made things busier and its been a little annoying. This is one thing where Spring Break occuring while we are here should make things more interesting.

I ended up at Deanies Seafood Restaurant and got take away. Its one of the places we tried to get a table at earlier in the night but couldn't wait the time to get a table. We got BBQ Shrimp and Gumbo. The place was featured on Man vs Food so if you google or search for it on Youtube you will see where we got takeaway. I brought it back to the room and we joked its the first time in a long time where just Renee and I were eating together.

I have photos to add, but im being lazy tonight. I might upload them tomorrow.

Tomorrow we are planning on going to the garden district, spend some more time in the french quarter, go on the Trams, the Steamboat for lunch or afternoon cruise, and I want to see a cemetry around here. Why a cemetry??? Read tomorrow and you will find out :-)

Hey Col,

Sounds like you are all having a great time! I am really enjoying reading out your adventures :)
