3rd March 2013 - Los Angeles & NBA
The last word of the last post was 'hopefully'. As in hopefully get a good nights sleep. Well... that didn't really happen. Kobe has adjusted to the timezone change really easily. I think the fact he has a sleep normally in the middle of the day helps. Charli on the other hand, has to deal with jetlag just like Renee and I, and she is struggling.
Last night she woke up several times, got a temperature, had a headache and even threw up a couple of times. We were starting to think she was getting sick and then certain things she said and did made us feel that most of what she had was due to her body changing to the different sleep pattern.
She got up this morning and was pretty miserable. He eyes were still falling out of her head she was that tired. She had a long shower which seemed to help and then we went and got a little breakfast and she was pretty good there.
We had tickets to the NBA at 12:30pm, so we had to decide what we were going to do. In the end she wasn't looking to good, so Kobe and I left for the game, while Charli and Renee were going to stay behind, get Charli to have a small sleep and then come and join us if time permitted.
Kobe and I left for the train station which was directly next to the hotel. I thought it was across the road from the hotel, but it was even closer than that which worked out great. Especially as when i got to the station i realised that in the chaos of organising everything and getting only the Kobe stuff, I had left the tickets in our room.
When i got back to the room, Charli was upset and crying because she wanted to go to the game. So we decided we would try. Worst comes to worst we could just return home. She was tired but none of the complaints she had during the night we had seen for several hours so thought we were past that.
As soon as we mentioned she was going she seemed to spark up a bit. We got to the station and on the train. She was so close to going to sleep on that train, but stayed awake. We swapped train and nearly as soon as we were on that, she closed her eyes and lay in my arms and went to sleep. Poor little princess.
About 20 minutes from the Staple Center station, Renee went to say something to Kobe and he too had closed his eyes. The train eventually pulled up at the station and we both walked off the train with a sleeping child over our shoulder. During the short walk to the Arena Charli woke up. While entering the Arena and going through security, Kobe awake. Everyone was awake for the NBA..... for now :-)
To start with Charli was really excited by the game which was a little surprising. We expected Kobe to be interested, but thought Charli might not have been that impressed. Whenever the crowd cheered, she would clap too.
It was time for lunch, and like every good sporting arena in America, there wasn't a shortage of food. While we did consider a few different things, we thought we would try and play it fairly safe and get something we knew they would eat.... McDonalds.
After lunch, Charli seemed to get tired again. Eventually, she closed her eyes, and fell asleep in her chair.
It became apparent fairly quickly that while Charli was sleeping, she wasn't exactly comfortable. I scooped her up out of her seat and she lay in my arms asleep. Whenever someone needed to get past me, i would stand up with her in my arms, wait for them to pass, and then sit back down. She would stay asleep the whole time.
Kobe was enjoying the game. He enjoyed the game, and also the entertainment during timeouts and end of quarters etc.
Eventually, Charli awake and was happy to see we had some popcorn to eat. She was happy to sit there with the tub of popcorn slowly eating it.
The game finished, we headed to a nearby supermarket to get something for Charli to try and help her feel better. She had been having panadol, but it didn't seem to be helping her as much as we liked. We got something similar to nurofen for children, and almost immediately after giving it to her, she sparked up another level, and was like the Charli we are used to, know and love :-)
While i considered staying and getting tickets to the Lakers game that night and going with Kobe, logic prevailed and we all headed back to the hotel. We got pizza delivered for tea as there wasn't much around our hotel foodwise, and we didn't want to take the kids out as it was starting to get cold.
All in all, the day had a bit of drama but considering how the day started we were really happy with how it ended. At first it seemed like there was no chance Charli would go to the basketball, but in the end we were happy with the decision we made. At the time and heading there we were both worried about how she was going to be and feel.
We were all pretty tired after tea, bath and bed so we have all been to sleep. I woke up and looked at the window and thought it must be morning. Looked at the clock and I was right... just. It was 12:15am. I was thinking it must have been close to 6am. Hmmmm. So instead of being a smart cookie and trying to go back to sleep, i decided to get the laptop and type this up.
Both kids are soundly asleep, and while in the middle of writting this i did have to go and pick Kobe up as he had managed to fall out of bed, something he has never done before. While the kids are sleeping, i think they are tossing and turning a lot more than normal, hence the reason he managed to find himself lying on the ground. Straight back to sleep for him though :-)
Charli has been interesting with the trip so far. She is normally a fussy eater, but there have been a few surprising things while over here. We made her a vegemite and cheese sandwich for lunch yesterday, and she took a bite out of it and didn't want to eat anymore. She didn't like the bread over here. She had rice bubbles and milk for breakfast, and after a mouthful of that she didn't want anymore as the milk tastes different here. Im sure there was something else she ate and didn't like here, but right now my mind is coming up empty. Oh well.. it is 1:56am, maybe that has something to do with it?
Tomorrow we catch a flight in the morning to Oklahoma City. We pickup our car there, so that will begin the start of our scenic drive towards Miami Florida.
